Why it’s important to step out of your comfort zone
Sometimes change happens in the most unexpected way…
Why it is Important to Step Out of our Comfort Zone
Humans are creatures of habit and in our comfort zone our activities and behaviours fit a routine which minimises risk and stress. It’s where we, as business owners, are in complete control of our environment.
But here’s the thing, there are people out there who need and want the products or services we provide. So, rather than asking, “why me?”, ask yourself “why not me?”. Why not put yourself in their way and get noticed? If it isn’t you, there are plenty of others who will happily take your place in front of your potential clients and customers.
What Holds Us Back?
Fear. This could be a fear of failing or being worried about what others think of you. It could also be a fear of success and how we would cope with it. Then there is the fear of others judging us and questioning if we are any good.
Not being good enough. Even though we know we are more than capable we are often our own worst critic and tell ourselves we are not good enough.
Compare and contrast. We compare ourselves to others on social media and online platforms, and then start to doubt ourselves when we see we are not as busy or seemingly as successful as others.
Tips for Taking Charge of Change
- Take it Slow and Steady
You don’t have to change your entire way of working to reap more rewards. Try dipping your toe in to make some smaller changes at first. Understand what success really means for you and your business, what the obstacles are and what you fear by facing them. Then create specific actions to overcome your fears – this may be joining a new networking group, or cold calling a potential client or supplier. These are small steps which open you up to new business opportunities. - Try Something New
Learn and develop new skills to overcome particular challenges which have been preventing you from moving forward. This could be for your business, but could just as easily be for your own wellbeing. Seizing a new opportunity will provide you with lots of different and positive possibilities - Challenge yourself
To run a successful business and be at the top of your game, it is important to consider how you can improve not just yourself, but your team, systems and processes. Challenging yourself and how your business runs will help to drive success. - Delegate/Mentor
Why not assign some of your work to your team, or freelance it out? It would be better to do it yourself, right? What would happen if they didn’t do it right or there is a problem? You will never know unless you let them try. - Recognise the areas where you hold yourself back
Identify the barriers that are stopping you, and come up with strategies to overcome them. What is it that frustrates you because you know that if you can just get past it, you would increase your chances of success - Be Consistent
The more you push yourself the greater confidence you’ll gain. Don’t stop at the first sign of success. For example, if you have had the courage to post a live video on social media, don’t just stop at one, keep going until it becomes second-nature – then you’ll see the rewards of your hard work.
“As you move outside of your comfort zone, what was once the unknown and frightening becomes your new normal.” — Robin S. Sharma
When you step outside of your comfort zone, two amazing things happen:
- Firstly, you attract others – clients, customers, competitors, suppliers, future team members – to help accelerate your journey to attaining your goals.
- Secondly, you help others to grow by becoming a role model and having a positive impact on their lives.
Change and growth can only occur when we push ourselves away from being comfortable. Good things don’t happen just because we want them, only when we take action.
